Airplane Reef, Waianae

The Airplane ledge is a unique dive site for Hawaii because of the opportunity to see a wreck, as well as a natural reef on the same dive.  The sunken airplane at the airplane ledge is a Beech 18.  This twin engine small passenger aircraft was intentionally sunk at this location in the early 1990's. This aircraft was originally one of three sunk in this location. Hurricane Iwa scattered them.

Two were never found and the Beech was in deeper water. Two intrepid souls rigged her with lines and she was “flown” to her current resting place. Unfortunately, she 'landed' wrong side up.  Over the years it has become a very unique habitat for hundreds of tropical fish that divers can see through cracks in the plane's wings and fuselage.  The surrounding reef forms a large horseshoe around the sunken craft and provides great habitat for scores of fish and other wildlife. This is an excellent multi-level dive.
